The ZF 8-speed automatic did not become the default gearbox for modern BMW by accident. It went into production in 2008, and by the time the F30 3 Series and F10 5 Series were in full swing, it was the transmission of choice across BMW, Rolls-Royce, Land Rover and Bentley. Engineers and independent specialists who work with it regularly will tell you it’s one of the better units on the market. But they’ll also tell you it’s not invincible, and when one fails on a car that’s six, eight or ten years old, the cost of a dealer replacement can be the thing that decides the car’s fate.

MT Auto Parts, based in Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire, holds used ZF gearboxes for BMW in stock and supplies them UK-wide. The business is a specialist BMW breaker covering F, G and U generation models from 2012 onwards. Every ZF unit on the site is recovered from a professionally dismantled BMW, described by condition and mileage, and available for delivery to UK mainland addresses.

“The ZF automatic is in more BMWs than people realise,” a spokesperson for MT Auto Parts said. “A 320d, a 530e, an X5, they all use it in different configurations. We try to hold stock across those variants so buyers and trade garages aren’t waiting weeks for a unit.”

  • ZF 8HP family – fitted across BMW 1 to 8 Series, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, Z4 and M variants
  • RWD, xDrive and M xDrive variants all stocked
  • Prices from £330 to £2,999 depending on variant and mileage
  • VIN compatibility confirmation available before purchase
  • Free standard delivery under 20 kg; freight on complete assemblies
  • 30-day warranty on most used parts (T&C apply)
  • ATF Permit Ref: GB3106UW/A001

What the ZF 8HP Actually Is

The 8HP is a torque-converter automatic. That matters because it’s sometimes confused with the dual-clutch units BMW fits to M cars and front-wheel-drive models, which are entirely different in design, service requirements and failure modes. The 8HP uses a conventional fluid coupling with a lock-up clutch, eight forward ratios, and a hydraulic valve body. It shifts faster than most drivers notice and handles everything from a 116d to a 760i without significant recalibration between applications.

The unit’s reputation is built on that versatility. It’s also helped by the fact that ZF designed it to be serviceable. The valve body and mechatronic unit are accessible, fluid changes can be performed, and a worn unit is often rebuildable rather than a write-off. What you get from a used ZF gearbox unit at MT Auto Parts is the housing, internals and mechatronic as they left the donor vehicle, not a rebuilt exchange and not a reconditioned unit with unknown internal work.

Common failure points on higher-mileage 8HP units include the mechatronic sleeve seal, solenoid wear and torque converter shudder. A VERY GOOD rated example with low recorded mileage and a clean service history on the donor car is a different proposition from a WORN spare/repairs listing. MT Auto Parts rates and describes each unit, so buyers can make the call themselves.

The Three ZF 8HP Families at MT Auto Parts

BMW runs the ZF 8HP in three configurations across its 2012-onwards range. Each is a distinct unit, not just a software difference. The housing dimensions, clutch packs and oil pump specifications vary between them. Ordering the wrong variant is the most common mistake when sourcing BMW ZF gearboxes, and it’s avoidable.

Rear-Wheel Drive – GA8HP51Z

The GA8HP51Z is the standard rear-drive 8-speed. It goes into the 3 Series (F30, G20), 5 Series (F10, G30), 6 Series, 4 Series, X4 and the rear-drive Z4 variants, among others. It’s the most common unit through the breaker trade because there are more rear-drive F and G generation BMWs in circulation than any other configuration.

MT Auto Parts holds multiple examples across mileage bands. Prices run from around £330 for higher-mileage examples to around £1,450 for lower-mileage G-generation units. A 30,000-mile G30 530i unit and a 90,000-mile F30 320d unit are different parts and priced accordingly. Both are listed with condition ratings.

All-Wheel Drive — GA8HP51X and GA8HP76DZ

The xDrive versions share the 8HP naming but include an integrated transfer case output. They cannot be swapped with rear-drive units. The GA8HP51X covers the X3 xDrive and related models; the GA8HP76DZ covers the heavier-duty applications including the larger X5, X6 and 7 Series in xDrive configuration.

These come through in reasonable volume. The X3 xDrive30d was one of BMW’s best-selling models in the UK through the F and G generations, and plenty of them end up being broken. Units from £1,000 to £1,580 depending on type and mileage.

M xDrive – GA8X76AZ

The performance version. Fitted to the X5 M (F95), X6 M (F96) and M5 (F90) in the Competition and standard guise, it uses different clutch packs and a modified hydraulic calibration from the standard 8HP family. The GA8X76AZ is harder to find through the breaker trade because M cars are less common donor vehicles. Fewer come through, which keeps availability tight.

MT Auto Parts currently holds M xDrive units at £2,250 to £2,999. A buyer facing an M5 or X5 M gearbox repair who is weighing up dealer costs against a quality used unit will find the maths straightforward.

What to Know Before You Buy a Used BMW ZF Gearbox

A used ZF gearbox is not a fit-and-forget purchase without some preparation. Three things matter more than anything else:

  • Condition and mileage – every listing on mtautoparts.com states the part’s condition and the recorded mileage from the donor vehicle. Check both before you order.
  • Compatibility – the GA8HP51Z, GA8HP51X and GA8X76AZ are not interchangeable. The same model year BMW can have been built with different sub-variants depending on engine, output and options. VIN confirmation before purchase is available from MT Auto Parts and is strongly recommended for automatic gearboxes.
  • Adaptation after fitting – ZF 8HP units require a full oil fill procedure using ZF Lifeguard Fluid 8 and a transmission adaptation reset using BMW-capable diagnostic software. This is not optional and should be factored into any fitting quote. On G-generation BMWs, the gearbox communicates over ENET. Standard OBD2 scanners cannot perform the adaptation.

Transmission Control Units (TCUs) are stocked separately at MT Auto Parts, currently listed at £854.99. TCUs on BMW ZF automatics are part-number specific. They cannot be freely swapped between vehicles; they require coding to the car after fitment. If the TCU on the donor car was also the cause of the fault, sourcing a replacement unit alongside the gearbox itself may be the cleaner repair.

Pricing Across the Range

Used ZF transmissions for BMW at MT Auto Parts span a wide price range because the stock spans a wide range of variants, conditions and mileage bands. A workshop sourcing a replacement unit for a 3 Series customer and another sourcing for an M5 are looking at different units, different availability and different price points.

For context, current pricing across the ZF 8HP families stocked at MT Auto Parts:

  • GA8HP51Z (RWD) – from around £330 (higher mileage) to £1,450 (low mileage G-generation). Multiple options across that range.
  • GA8HP51X / GA8HP76DZ (xDrive) – from around £1,000 to £1,580 depending on type and recorded mileage.
  • GA8X76AZ (M xDrive) – from £2,250 to £3,000. These are genuine M-car units with the correct calibration for the application.
  • Transfer boxes (ATC13, ATCL45L) – from £300 to £1,300, for xDrive models where the transfer box is the separate fault.
  • Transmission Control Units (TCUs) – £855.

Prices are based on current MT Auto Parts stock and are subject to change as vehicles are dismantled and new units come in. The listing on mtautoparts.com reflects live availability.

Getting the Right Unit: VIN Confirmation and Trade Enquiries

The single most useful thing a buyer or workshop can do before ordering a used BMW ZF gearbox is confirm compatibility against the vehicle’s VIN. BMW’s build data associates each car’s VIN with its exact transmission specification, including the variant code, the software generation and any factory-fitted options that affect the gearbox calibration. MT Auto Parts offers VIN confirmation before purchase.

This matters particularly for:

  • X5 and X7 models where both the GA8HP76DZ and GA8X76AZ were available depending on specification. The M Performance and standard xDrive variants do not share a gearbox.
  • 5 and 7 Series plug-in hybrids, which use the hybrid-specific 8HP75HZ rather than the standard 8HP family. These are different units and not interchangeable.
  • Later G-generation models where mid-cycle engineering changes affected the mechatronic software generation fitted from the factory.

Trade buyers, independent BMW specialists, gearbox rebuilders, and body shops can contact MT Auto Parts directly for stock checks on specific variants or recently dismantled vehicles. The business regularly supplies workshops and is familiar with the sourcing patterns that come up most often: an independent specialist working through a ZF automatic diagnosis will find the team useful to speak to.

Delivery: free standard delivery within 48 hours to UK mainland addresses applies to items under 20 kg. Complete ZF gearbox assemblies exceed this threshold. Additional freight charges apply, usually about £80 per gearbox, with specialist pallet carriers used. Most orders leave within 24 to 48 hours of payment
